The first Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall in Guangdong and its large 5.8-meter-tall stone statue were grandly inaugurated at Xianhu Scenic Area in Xiancheng Town, Chaonan District, Shantou City.

Eastern Guangdong was where national hero Zheng Chenggong (1624–1662) recruited troops, established his base, gathered supplies, and prepared for retaking Taiwan during his resistance against the Qing. He launched military campaigns in Guangdong 16 times, leaving behind numerous historical sites on Nan’ao Island where he raised an army and in the Chaoshan mainland where he stationed troops. In the 1950s, ruins of his troops’ barracks were discovered at Bantianfo Peak in Shanhushan, Xianhu. Starting in 2006, with support from the Guangdong Provincial Museum and relevant departments of Shantou City and district, and thanks to a generous donation of 4.2 million yuan from a benefactor, the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, a Neolithic cultural relics museum, and a statue of Zheng Chenggong were constructed in Xianhu Scenic Area. The two-story memorial hall covers a construction area of about 300 square meters per floor. The exhibition is divided into six sections, showcasing Zheng Chenggong’s heroic efforts in resisting the Qing, campaigning across Fujian and Guangdong, and driving out the Dutch to reclaim Taiwan, making it another important site for patriotic education.

Zheng Chenggong, originally named Sen and childhood name Fusong, with the courtesy name Damu and pseudonym Mingyan, was born on July 14, 1624, in Shirinohama, Hirado City, Japan, to Zheng Zhilong and a woman from the Tagawa family of Hirado, Nagasaki, Japan. His ancestral home was Shijing, Nan’an. In the third year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1630), at the age of 7, he returned from Japan to Anping (now Anhai Town, Jinjiang) to study and was given the name Sen.

At the age of 11, Zheng Chenggong once wrote a remarkable essay on the topic “Sweeping, Greeting, Responding, and Advancing or Retreating,” composing the striking line: “The conquests of Tang and Wu are no more than sweeping; the abdications of Yao and Shun are no more than advancing or retreating.” Later, he studied the classics, history, and military strategy intensively...
