Site of the Former Red Palace and Red Square in Da Nanshan The Red Palace is located at Sanfang Ancestral Hall in Linzhao Village, Hongchang Town, Chaoyang. The exterior walls of the hall were painted red, and revolutionary red flags flew from its roof, leading locals to call it the Red Palace.
In mid-July 1929, the 47th Regiment of the Red Army was established here; in the winter of 1929, the Revolutionary Committee of Chaoyang County was also founded here; in early 1930, the Fourth Branch of the Military and Political School of the 16th Red Army Division was also set up here. From the winter of 1929 to early 1932, many important meetings were held here, making the Red Palace widely known across the Da Nanshan Soviet Area.
The Red Square is located at the foot of Fei’e Mountain in front of Dabi Village, Hongchang Town, Chaoyang. In the spring of 1931, the Dongjiang Special Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the Soviet Government of the Counties of Chaoyang, Puning, and Huidong led the masses in creating a square here, covering an area of 1,400 square meters. On the southeastern side of the square stands a large round-shaped rock that served as the Red Army’s parade reviewing stand, with the words “Consolidate the Soviet Regime” engraved on the stone wall facing the square. From May 17 to 23, the Second Congress of Workers, Peasants, and Soldiers of Dongjiang was held here, and the committee secretary Xu Guosheng named the square “Red Square” during the meeting. Later, a stage, sports field, and swing area were built in the square, making it the military, political, and cultural hub of the Da Nanshan Soviet Area. In 1935, when the Nationalist troops under Deng Longguang occupied Da Nanshan, the stage, sports field, and swing area of the Red Square were burned down.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, between 1962 and 1963, the provincial and county governments built a four-cornered pavilion on the reviewing stand, restored the stage to its original state, and constructed a reinforced concrete monument to revolutionary martyrs on a hill at the southern end of the Red Square, standing 10.2 meters tall.
In December 1979, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province designated it as a cultural heritage site.
