Guanxiangzhou

Guanxiangzhou is located on the west side of the main channel of the Xiang River in the northern part of the region, five kilometers from the county town, covering a total area of over 200 acres. The islet is densely forested, with century-old trees found everywhere. It enjoys a mild climate that is warm in winter and cool in summer. Originally an important base for high-quality citrus fruits and various cash crops of the county’s seed farm, it has since been developed into a popular destination for tourism, entertainment, leisure, swimming, fishing, and summer retreats.

The islet originally had the Wenfeng Pagoda and Wenfeng Academy. Climbing the pagoda offered a panoramic view of the Xiang River scenery. Looking south against the current, the still reflections sank into the blue water, creating a serene and delightful sight — hence the origin of the islet’s name. Unfortunately, these two ancient structures were destroyed by Japanese aircraft bombings in 1938.

Every summer and autumn, if you visit with companions, it feels as though you’ve stepped into another world — a place free from the hustle and bustle of the city, truly an idyllic paradise. At dusk, standing on the islet and gazing out at the Xiang River, you’ll see cargo boats with sails hoisted, seagulls bathing on the sandy shores, and the slanting glow of the setting sun casting shimmering, dragon-scale-like ripples across the water. It’s as if you’re riding above a mythical dragon, soaring and wandering like an immortal. That’s why it’s honored as one of the “Eight Scenic Spots in the Suburbs of Hengshan” — known as the “Guanxiang Sunset Glow.”
