The Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Inspection of the Hunan Peasant Movement (Xinyuan Ferry) is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Inspection of the Hunan Peasant Movement (Xinyuan Ferry) is situated on the banks of the Xiang River in Xinyuan Village, Changjiang Town, Hengshan County, Hengyang City, Hunan Province, with Shiwang (now part of Hengdong County) on the opposite bank. In January 1927, while inspecting the peasant movement in Hengshan, Mao Zedong arrived at Xinyuan Ferry. He investigated the local peasant movement from the ferry pavilion and took a boat from there to Shiwang to carry out investigation work. Later, he disembarked at Jinhu Ferry and proceeded to the nearby Fengxian Temple (which served as the headquarters of the coal mine union and the workers' patrol squad at the time), where he convened meetings with local peasant association leaders and coal mine patrol squad leaders to guide them on how to effectively carry out the work of the peasant associations and the patrol squads. In June 1927, Mao Zedong returned to Hengshan and also departed from Xinyuan Ferry by boat to Shiwang. Xinyuan Ferry is an old ferry dating back to the Ming Dynasty, with remnants of stone steps and a stone pavilion still preserved at the dock. The Xinyuan Ferry in Changjiang Town, Hengshan County, is where Comrade Mao Zedong engaged in revolutionary activities during his inspection of the Hunan peasant movement in January 1927, holding significant revolutionary historical value. With a long history and well-preserved original features, the dock’s stone steps and the brick-and-stone octagonal pavilion not only showcase natural characteristics but also embody a rich local style. It serves as valuable material for studying the formation of docks and ferries during the Ming Dynasty, possessing important scientific and artistic value.

Xinyuan Village: Xinyuan Village

Xinyuan Village in Changjiang Town is located in the eastern part of Changjiang, adjacent to the Xiang River, facing Shiwang Town of Hengdong County across the river. To the south, it connects with Yangjiayuan Village and Kaiyun Town of Changjiang Town, and to the north, it borders Aozhou Village of Changjiang Town. The county road Hengxia Highway runs through the village. It is 9 kilometers from National Highway 107 and 15 kilometers from Hengshan County seat. The village administers 14 villager groups, with 421 households and a population of 1,734. It covers a total area of 5.5 square kilometers, including 5,210 mu of arable land and 3,250 mu of mountainous land, characterized by a sparse population.
