Zeng Guofan Life Research Museum

Zeng Guofan, a renowned statesman and military leader of the late Qing Dynasty who hailed from Xiangxiang, is an outstanding representative of the distinctive Xiangxiang culture nurtured by this magical land. He had a profound impact on modern China and serves as a major cultural brand and emblem of Xiangxiang.

To explore the culture of the Xiang Army, the People's Government of Xiangxiang City established the Zeng Guofan Life Research Museum at the former Xiangbin Academy in Xiangxiang, where Zeng Guofan once studied. The museum features architecture in the style of the late Qing Dynasty and includes nine exhibition rooms. The exhibits are divided into eight sections: “Humble Beginnings and Diligent Study,” “Years in the Capital,” “Leader of the Xiang Army,” “Governor-General of North and South,” “Promoter of Westernization,” “Confucian Scholar of His Age,” “Family Education and Legacy,” and “Influence on Hometown.” The displays integrate sound, light, and electricity to bring the “immortal” Zeng Guofan — “a paragon of virtue, merit, and words, and a complete man as scholar, general, and statesman” — across the barriers of time and history, back to life before today’s visitors.

Zeng Guofan (1811–1872), originally named Zicheng, courtesy name Bohan, art name Dichen, posthumous title Wenzheng, was a native of Xiangxiang, Changsha Prefecture, Hunan (now Shuangfeng County, Hunan Province). He was a military strategist, Neo-Confucian scholar, politician, calligrapher, and one of the “Revitalization Statesmen” of the Qing Dynasty. He was also a litterateur and the founder of the “Xiangxiang School” of late Qing prose. He served as Viceroy of Liangjiang, Viceroy of Zhili, and Grand Secretary of the Wuying Hall, and was granted the title of First Class Yiyong Marquis. He was born in Baiyangping, Xiangxiang, Changsha Prefecture, Hunan (now Tianziping, Heye Town, Shuangfeng County, Hunan Province).
