From the evening of May 24 to the 25th, a sudden and severe rainstorm hit Pingxiang, affecting multiple counties, districts, and towns. Subsequently, some netizens claimed that on the 25th, due to heavy rain and lightning, a hiker had died in the Wugong Mountain Scenic Area but did not receive rescue from the scenic area.
A hiker surnamed Zhou, who was staying at the mountaintop that night, told reporters: "At the time, we were staying in an iron cabin, with lightning repeatedly striking the walls and sparks flying. The fierce wind almost blew off the iron roof, and amid the dense sound of rain, we could faintly hear calls for help from the mountaintop."
Reporters learned from the Wugong Mountain Scenic Area Management Committee of Pingxiang City that that night, two staff members of the committee were on duty at the mountaintop of the Golden Summit Scenic Area. After the thunderstorm occurred, they quickly activated the emergency plan, organizing various guesthouses at the Golden Summit to accommodate campers in tents. There were no tourist deaths or injuries at the Golden Summit Scenic Area that day.
"At 10:32 a.m. on May 25, the Wugong Mountain Scenic Area Service Center received a distress call reporting that four hikers from Zhuzhou, Hunan, who were camping in tents on a mountaintop in the Huayunjie Nature Reserve, suffered burns when their metal ground mat conducted electricity and caused their tent to catch fire." Information released by the management committee showed that after receiving the call, the scenic area promptly dispatched the Blue Sky Rescue Team to the scene. The hikers were successfully rescued and brought down the mountain at 12:23 p.m. Among the four hikers, one had minor burns on the arm, one on the leg, one had mild eye burns, and one was uninjured. None of the injured hikers were seriously hurt and all had returned home that same day.
