The Liu Family Courtyard in Gongyi

The Liu Family Courtyard in Gongyi is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The Liu Family Courtyard, located southwest of Guanzhuang Village in Zhitian Town, Gongyi City, has withstood centuries of turmoil, warfare, and societal changes, yet still retains a large collection of well-preserved, staggered Ming and Qing dynasty residential courtyards. The Liu Family Courtyard bears witness to the family’s rise and fall over several hundred years.

Also known as the Wang Family Courtyard, it originally featured a main hall building, upper chambers, wing rooms, reverse-facing rooms, corridors, screens, porches, cave dwellings, and weaving machines—all arranged harmoniously and in an orderly fashion. According to the Wang family genealogy of local villagers: during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, the sixth-generation ancestor Wang Wencan migrated from Shanxi to Gongyi. He built four large courtyards and one tall building. By the eighth generation during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty, due to poor management and declining family fortunes, the properties were sold to the Liu family. Most of these four courtyards are still inhabited by people surnamed Liu, and the tall building is also still used by residents of Guanzhuang with the Liu surname.

The Liu Family Courtyard is a traditional residence from the Ming and Qing periods in northern China. The houses are symmetrically arranged along a north-south axis, with the courtyard facing south and the main gate located at the southeast corner. Inside the gate is a screen wall, preventing outsiders from seeing activities within the courtyard. The main house lies along the central axis, flanked by side rooms and left and right wing rooms. The main house serves as the living quarters for the elders, while the wing rooms are for the younger generations. This solemn layout reflects the traditional values of the northern people—orderly, respectful of hierarchy, and clear in distinguishing seniority and age. The Liu Family Courtyard faces south, with tall courtyard walls and spacious yards that are long from north to south. This design effectively shields against harsh natural conditions such as strong northern winds and severe western sun exposure in summer—an ingenious and masterful creation. It fully demonstrates how the laboring people of China in modern times have skillfully adapted to and transformed their natural environment, a true testament to human ingenuity.

The Liu Family Courtyard features typical characteristics of local residential architecture. It boasts a grand scale, rational layout, and good preservation, holding certain historical and artistic value. It was discovered during the first national cultural relics survey in 1984. In December 1999, a scholar published “Wang Family Building” in the Zhengzhou Cultural Relics Annals. It was investigated again during the fifth Henan cultural relics survey in November 2006. On June 16, 2008, the Liu Family Courtyard was announced as part of the fifth batch of key provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Henan Province.
