Capturing food, fun, and entertainment “in a drawing” — Chen Yingyi creates the “Chiayi City Youthful Culture Map”

Chen Yingyi, a girl from New Taipei City, fell in love with Chiayi after coming to study at Chiayi University. An avid painter, she hand-drew many maps of Chiayi City and shared them on the “Chiayi City Youthful Culture Map” fan page. Chen Yingyi said this is not only her graduation gift but also a gift for Chiayi. By featuring her favorite spots on the map, she hopes the Youthful Culture Map will help more people discover Chiayi’s attractions and delicious food.

Chen Yingyi’s method was to use the Google Maps version of Chiayi City as the base map. She looked up local shops online and marked them one by one on the map. Using semi-transparent tracing paper, she managed to mark over 30 shops in just one afternoon. Thoughtfully, she also included shop information. In addition, there are themed versions, currently featuring five themes:“Coffee and Afternoon Tea,” “Backpacker Inns,” “Nighttime Itineraries,” “Arts and Culture Spaces,” and “Chicken Rice.”Chen Yingyi explained that most of the places she features are popular among the youth culture crowd.

Taking the coffee shop-themed map as an example, the featured shops come from both online searches and contributions by netizens. Chen Yingyi mentioned that the map will be updated. Regarding the selection of shops: “Each theme has a definition. For instance, for the coffee shop map, we focus on independently operated cafes and do not include chain coffee shops.””

About the idea of creating the Chiayi City Youthful Culture Map, Chen Yingyi said that during a conversation with her father, they discussed how people often associate Chiayi with only Alishan when thinking about attractions. So she decided to compile a comprehensive map of food, fun, and entertainment in Chiayi. The Youthful Culture Map can be freely downloaded from the fan page, and netizens can also interact with Chen Yingyi via Facebook.
