Ancient City of Kunyang

The site of the Eastern Han Dynasty’s Ancient City of Kunyang is located in Jiuxian Town, about thirty li south of Ye County in present-day Henan Province. The current site of Jiuxian Town sits right in the middle of the ancient city of Kunyang. The area around the ancient city is a small hilly region, with mountain ranges stretching only in the southwestern direction fifty li away; the rest of the terrain is mostly flat. To the northeast, rivers crisscross the land, and it is known for its “golden sands and emerald waves” in the reaches of the Dao River. Two major rivers converge here, and the city was built along the water, featuring an extremely secure and strategic terrain that made Kunyang a pivotal military stronghold in the Central Plains—ideal for both advancing to battle and retreating for defense.
