Last updated 2026-09-25 — “The specialty of robatayaki is that everything can be grilled,” says Long Tsai-fu, who trained at the original restaurant in Japan. Compared to the Japanese-style yakiniku or barbecue restaurants familiar to many, all the grilled dishes here are prepared by skilled chefs, so customers don’t have to worry about grilling themselves.

On a regular weekday lunch hour in December, we visited “Tori Jō Robatayaki” located in Taoyuan’s Dajiang Shopping Mall. Stepping into this restaurant designed to resemble a traditional Japanese home, with a curtain bearing the kanji for “charcoal” hanging at the entrance, the first thing that catches your eye is the open grill counter. The chef up front serves grilled fish using a wooden oar, while the grill area chefs light straw to sear chicken with fierce flames, creating a lively cooking atmosphere.

Tori Jō Robatayakiis a brand from Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Its “originals” in Japan consist of three types of restaurants: charcoal-grilled skewers, creative cuisine, and kamameshi (rice cooked in a pot). After coming to Taiwan, the three concepts were unified into one, bringing together the “family menu” all at once. Restaurant manager Long Tsai-fu describes it as: “It’s very much like a Japanese teppanyaki eatery. Compared to an izakaya, it offers more imperial-style dishes; compared to a skewer shop, it has more sushi and seafood. From time to time, there’s also a tuna slicing show – the variety is rich.”

  1. When seated at the counter, try grilled dishes like “grilled scorpionfish” (priced per order, shown example approximately 580 TWD per serving), which the grill chef will serve using an oar.
