Zhenyang Gate

Zhenyang Gate is the southern gate of Penglai Water City, facing south with its back to the north. It was built in the ninth year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty. The gatehouse had long collapsed, leaving only the gate tunnel. It was restored in 1987. The arched gate tunnel is 3 meters wide, 5.3 meters high, and 13.75 meters deep. Above the tunnel is embedded a plaque inscribed with the name “Zhenyang Gate,” written by Wu Zuoren.

The gatehouse has two stories— it appears to have three tiers of flying eaves from the outside, commonly known as “three drops of water.” The roof features gable and hip design, covered with glazed tiles, and the ridges are adorned with six mythical beasts. Wind chimes hang beneath the eaves. The gatehouse is surrounded by open corridors on all sides. The first floor is level with the top of the city wall, and the outer sides of the north-south open corridors are lined with crenellations. The second floor has double eaves, and the columns of the open corridors are surrounded by wooden railings.

About 50 meters of city wall have been restored on each side of Zhenyang Gate, and a 5,000-square-meter square has been built in front of the gate. Since 1989, the opening ceremony of the Penglai Economic and Trade Symposium has been held here annually. In 1991, the welcoming ceremony for the World Tourism Day celebration of the ancient city of Dengzhou was also held here.
