The quaint mountain town of Nanzhuang in Miaoli boasts naturally gifted lakes and mountains, surrounded by peaks that make it feel like a hidden paradise. Nanzhuang’s Penglai Creek Ecological Park features a well-known fish-watching trail about 1.6 kilometers long. Thanks to conservation efforts by local residents, the creek water remains crystal clear, allowing visitors to spot the Taiwan shovel-jaw carp, known as the “firefly of the water.” On summer nights, fireflies can also be seen in areas free from light pollution.

Shando’s wood-fired bread is highly sought after by fans of handmade bread due to its emphasis on manual production and traditional brick oven wood-fired baking. Committed to authentic flavors, Shando offers only six types of bread, including whole wheat, multigrain, longan red wine, stollen, kumquat red bean, and ruby. In Penglai Village, Nanzhuang Township, there is a secluded cold spring trail located upstream of Penglai Creek, where the water temperature remains around 18°C. The area is shaded by beech and fir trees, and local homestay operators have developed and maintained it as an ecological cold spring pool. The Shan Shan National Park has also built a nearby trail and fence.
