The highly popular 7th Pier-2 Grand Dolls 3D On-Site Creation Event — “People from Kaohsiung Are Here – City Character Creation Special Exhibition” will make its splendid debut at Warehouse B7 in the Penglai District from March 2 to March 31. This year, five emerging artists have been invited to create on-site, giving a fresh new look to five worker and fisherwoman dolls and welcoming them as new members of the “People from Kaohsiung” family. In addition, the exhibition space also showcases photos of dolls painted during the past six editions, featuring over 60 works that connect with the ongoing on-site doll creations. The complete gathering of all “People from Kaohsiung” members spans past and present, presented in full view to the audience.

The Pier-2 worker and fisherwoman dolls installed along the bike path have become a popular photo spot for visitors. However, due to long-term outdoor display, some dolls have faded or been damaged and needed refurbishment before receiving new paint jobs. As a result, some of the older family members have temporarily “disappeared,” while new ones are being born. The 7th edition of “People from Kaohsiung Are Here – City Character Creation Special Exhibition” will soon introduce five new members in diverse designs. The doll family continues to grow, offering returning visitors to Pier-2 a fresh visual experience with differently styled worker and fisherwoman dolls, as if changing with the seasons.

The 7th “People from Kaohsiung Are Here – City Character Creation Special Exhibition” invites five contemporary emerging artists — Lin Shu-Kai, Chang Tzu-Lun + Wu Chih-Jung, Huang Yu-Hsuan, Huang Po-Hsun, and Tsai Chieh-Hsin — to take part in the creation. These five artists bring their creativity and reinterpret the image of “Kaohsiung” from unique perspectives and with profound meanings. Chang Tzu-Lun + Wu Chih-Jung, with the theme “Wandering the Harbor City,” transform the “Worker” and “Fisherwoman” dolls into representations of “Northern Kaohsiung” and “Southern Kaohsiung,” portraying major city landmarks on the dolls using detailed hand-painting techniques. Meanwhile, Huang Yu-Hsuan and Tsai Chieh-Hsin showcase the spirit and attitude of “People from Kaohsiung” from different angles, highlighting the diversity of the Kaohsiung people.

 

In addition, some artists expand the concept of “Kaohsiung” to broader themes such as “city” and “island,” expressed through the spirit of contemporary art. Lin Shu-Kai, with the theme “Balcony Urban Civilization,” reflects profoundly on the excessive development of modern cities. Huang Po-Hsun’s “Stories from Afar” transforms symbols of the “Taiwan Island” into visual language, weaving together “stories from afar” and shaping a distinctive urban landscape.
