A century-old railway transformed into a giant landscape: The 38-Track Night Light Mission

Kaohsiung’s Pier-2 Art Center has launched the Light Mission, where 12 domestic and international artist teams use programmed coding combined with LED light strips to turn the railway into a colorful beam of light, illuminating the century-old tracks.

The century-old railway park in Pier-2’s Penglai Area has a new nighttime attraction starting today. This large-scale new media art project, titled “Hama Light Mission,” invited 12 artist groups including Yao Zhonghan, Ye Tinghao, Huang Yijing, Lin Lijin, Zhang Yongda, Wang Liansheng, Wang Furu, Ji Bohao, Zheng Xianyu, Luo Heli, Hu Jinxiang, and the South Korean team ADHD to participate in the creation. Covering an area of nearly 7 hectares in the railway park, the project uses over 20,000 meters of LED light strips embedded with more than 600,000 high-brightness LED bulbs. The lights flow along the tracks synchronized with music, creating a fantastical fusion of visual and auditory experiences.

The best viewing spot is the Red Bridge in Pier-2’s Penglai Area.

The Hama Light Mission large-scale landscape light art show runs from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM every evening, with a new segment premiering every half hour. Visitors can walk among the tracks to observe the changing lights or climb up to the Red Bridge for a panoramic view.

The old railway beside the Penglai warehouses of Pier-2 was completed in 1908. The radially arranged tracks, together with the portside warehouses and harbor, form a unique land-sea transport system that tells the century-long history of Kaohsiung Port. It is also a cultural landscape that best showcases the modernization of harbor operations. In the future, different artists will continue to be invited to create ever-changing light displays.

A new segment of artist-created work will be presented every half hour from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM each evening.
