Penglai Coastal Defense Ruins

The Penglai Coastal Defense Ruins are a cultural heritage protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Penglai Coastal Defense Ruins are located in Liujia gou Town, Xingang Subdistrict, Penglai Pavilion Subdistrict, and Beigou Town of Penglai City. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty, in 2013 they were designated as part of the fourth batch of Provincial-Level Cultural Heritage Protection Units by the People’s Government of Shandong Province.

During the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, due to harassment by Japanese pirates, the Ming government established a coastal defense system that integrated land and sea forces. Today, atop various high points along the coast of Penglai City, there are multiple beacon towers including those on Fengshanling, Heifengtai Mountain, and Tongjing Mountain, as well as the ruins of the Zhao’gezhuang military camp. Together, they formed a relatively comprehensive defensive system that protected Penglai’s coastline during the Ming Dynasty.
