Xintai Zhengjue Temple
Xintai Zhengjue Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.
Xintai Zhengjue Temple is located among the pine and cypress forests on the southern slope of Fayun Mountain, southwest of Xintai City, Shandong Province, and lies to the west of Guangming Reservoir. The *Xintai County Annals: Historical Sites* states: "Legend has it that a mysterious monk preached here, causing clouds to form, hence the name." It is also commonly known as "June Sixth Mountain" among locals. Xintai Zhengjue Temple integrates Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Temple inscriptions record that Zhengjue Temple was first built during the Eastern Han Dynasty. The front hall is the Vajra Hall, enshrining the Two Guardians, Heng and Ha. The four octagonal stone pillars were erected in the second year of the Xuanhe era. The middle hall is the Mahavira Hall, housing statues of Sakyamuni Buddha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Manjushri Bodhisattva. The roof ridges of the main hall are a fascinating feature, constructed with carved blue bricks fired using Tang Dynasty techniques. The front features a design of two dragons playing with a pearl, while the back depicts two phoenixes playing with peonies, with both sides adorned with patterns of flowing clouds and flames. On the eastern and western sides of the hall are corridors that enshrine deities such as the Goddess of Childbirth, the Medicine King, and the God of Wealth. To the east lies the Mining and Furnace Deity Temple, and to the west is the Guan Yu and Yue Fei Joint Shrine. The rear hall is the Mount Tai Palace, dedicated to the Goddess Bixia Yuanjun.
During a field survey in Liudu Town, the Xintai City Cultural Relics Census Team discovered Song Dynasty inscriptions at Zhengjue Temple. The temple is situated halfway up Fayun Mountain, north of Guangming East Village in Liudu Town. Fayun Mountain has long been a renowned site in Xintai, with "Emerald Haze over Fayun" being one of the ancient Eight Scenic Spots of Xintai. According to the *Xintai County Annals* from the Guangxu era, Zhengjue Temple was established in the first year of the Jianzhong Jingguo era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1101), and was repaired and renovated during the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The temple complex spans 65 meters from east to west and 73 meters from north to south, covering a construction area of over 5,500 square meters. It faces south and is built along the mountain terrain, featuring a two-courtyard layout in a traditional enclosed courtyard style, with an axial architectural arrangement. The complex consists of the Mountain Gate, Mahavira Hall, East and West Side Halls, and the Guan Yu and Yue Fei Joint Shrine.
