The Anqiu Juwei Site

The Anqiu Juwei Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Anqiu Juwei Site is located on the Anqiu Juwei mound, about 100 meters southeast of Caolou Village, Dianhutun Township, Heze City, Shandong Province. It is a site dating from the Neolithic Age to the Shang Dynasty, with a history of over 4,500 years.

The remaining mound is 3 meters high and approximately 500 meters in both length and width, with relatively straight walls and exposed cultural layers in the cross-section. The site has revealed stratified cultural remains from the Longshan Culture, Yueshi Culture, early Shang, and late Shang periods, stacked in sequence. The excavation of this mound expanded the known distribution range of the Yueshi Culture to the southwestern edge of Shandong Province. The Yueshi Culture distribution in Shandong thus became contiguous from east to west. As a result, the Yueshi Culture found here has been named the "Anqiu Type."

The Shang cultural layers at the Anqiu Juwei Site consist of continuous deposits from the early Shang to the late Shang — a rare continuity among other known Shang cultural sites in China. This confirms the academic reliability of the periodization of Shang culture and provides extremely important clues and evidence for further research into Shang culture and understanding the social conditions of that time.
