While cherry blossoms are in full bloom on Alishan, the purple peonies in Tainan’s Meiling are also bursting into vibrant color. The hills around Meiling offer great views, making them a popular choice among local hiking enthusiasts. Themain hiking trails include four routes: Meifeng, Wulong, Guanyin, and Meilong. Among these, the ancient Meifeng Trail and the section from Er层Ping up to Wulong Temple are currently home to over 10,000 purple peonies in full bloom.Along the way, clusters of purple flowers bloom brilliantly, creating a stunning sight.

The four main hiking trails in Meiling form a looped route that can be comfortably completed in about half a day. Among the four, the Wulong Trail is considered relatively gentle and suitable for the general public, stretching approximately 2.4 kilometers along a farm road. The starting point of the Guanyin Trail is behind the parking lot at Er层Ping,where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Chianan Plain and the Zengwen Reservoir.The Meilong Trail is the southernmost major trail in Meiling. Its front section follows a farm road, while the latter part winds through a secondary forest of bamboo and China jute.

Xu Hongwen, Secretary-General of the Meiling Scenic Area Development Association, said that due to less rainfall this year,the blooming period of the purple peonies has been delayed by about a month, and the viewing period runs from now until the end of March.Visitors are encouraged to make the trip up the mountain to admire the flowers and go hiking, as well as sample seasonal agricultural specialties and chicken dishes flavored with plums.

The Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau recommendsthat visitors driving to the area take the opportunity to explore nearby attractions such as Yongxing Suspension Bridge, Xuan Kong Temple, the Jiang Family Ancestral House, and Guidan Hot Springs—all great spots for a one-day trip.Yongxing Suspension Bridge is the longest in Taiwan, measuring 497 meters including its approach, and features a purple structure lit up with LED lights at night, creating a romantic atmosphere beloved by couples. It is also recommended to take the Green Main Line bus of the Greater Tainan Bus system to Yujing, then transfer to the Green 22 Line bus to directly reach Er层Ping in Meiling. It is advised to plan your itinerary around the four hiking trails to enjoy a healthy and refreshing purple peony hiking adventure.
