In November 2003, planning and construction began on Peony Commercial Plaza. During the construction, over 300 old houses and shanties were demolished, covering an area of 23,000 square meters. After more than a year, with an investment of 260 million yuan, the current modern commercial plaza, spanning over 80,000 square meters and integrating shopping, leisure, entertainment, and tourism, was completed. The plaza features a dynamic musical fountain, a rushing artificial waterfall, a surreal water screen movie, dazzling lighting displays, lifelike bronze sculptures, small bridges and flowing streams in the style of southern China, lush greenery, and the first female cavalry ceremonial squadron in southwestern Shandong. During the day, the plaza is bustling with activity and prosperity; at night, when the lights are turned on and shimmering, people gather in groups to sing and dance, making it an ideal place for leisure and entertainment. In 2005, it passed the provincial-level inspection and acceptance for outstanding property management projects. Peony Commercial Plaza has received high praise and acclaim from central, provincial, and municipal governments, as well as sister cities across the province and various sectors of society. Zhao Zhihao, former Secretary of the Shandong Provincial Committee, visited the plaza and inscribed the words “Model Commercial Street.”
