Anqiu Gu Dui Site

The Anqiu Gu Dui Site is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Anqiu Gu Dui Site is located 12 kilometers southeast of Heze city center. Through two trial excavations in 1969 and 1976, and a formal excavation in 1984, layers of cultural deposits were discovered, including those from the Late Shang, Early Shang, Yueshi, and Longshan cultures stacked in sequence. This filled in gaps in the distribution of the Yueshi culture in southwestern Shandong and the transitional phase between the Longshan and Shang cultures in the region. In 2001, the Anqiu Gu Dui Site was listed by the State Council as part of the fifth group of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

Gu Dui refers to large earthen mounds that rise above the surrounding land, mostly found in southwestern Shandong. According to statistics, there were nearly 500 Gu Dui sites historically in Heze, with over 100 still existing today. Many villages are even named after “Gu Dui.” The quantity, wide distribution, and density of these mounds in Heze are unique both in China and rare worldwide. Most of these several-meter-high mounds are ancient village ruins. The formation and distribution of such settlements are related to the flooding, silt deposition, and the low-lying, lake-filled geography of the Heze area, as influenced by ancient rivers like the Yellow River and Ji River. The accumulation periods of Heze’s Gu Dui sites can be traced back as early as the Dawenkou era, flourishing during the Longshan culture period and the Shang Dynasty. Some of the more famous Gu Dui sites in Heze include Fengzui Gu Dui, Anqiu Gu Dui, Anling Gu Dui, and Guan Gu Dui.
