Houtian Desert Ecological Tourism Area

Houtian Desert Ecological Tourism Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Houtian Desert is located in Houtian Township, Xinjian County, Jiangxi Province, about 30 kilometers from downtown Nanchang, covering an area of approximately 280 hectares. These undulating sand dunes were originally alluvial deposits from the Gan River. The river’s downcutting caused the surrounding banks to rise. Over millennia, under the relentless action of seasonal winds — eroding, transporting, and depositing sand — the present desert landscape was formed. At the southeastern edge of the desert lies a crescent-shaped lake, while sheltered areas behind the dunes preserve well-preserved primitive plant communities, home to many species of birds and small animals.

Moon Island: “Moon Island” is an island in the Gan River that resembles the shape of the moon. The Gan River flows here and meets the Jin River, forming a river bend that wraps closely around Moon Island — the origin of the name “Moon Bay” scenic area. From a high vantage point, Moon Island may not seem very large, but it actually spans over 600 acres. Standing at its center and walking across its grassy plains like a green carpet, you’ll enjoy the view of a natural pasture where “the sky is vast, the wilderness boundless, and the wind blows the grass low to reveal cattle and sheep,” creating a poetic immersion. Horseback riding enthusiasts can also rent a steed on the island and gallop freely to experience the thrill of prairie horse racing.

Taihe Fort Animal Entertainment Center: Established during the 2003 National Day Golden Week, this center has hosted tens of thousands of domestic and international visitors since its opening. It features main attractions such as renowned dog exhibitions, dog fighting shows, and greyhound racing. The dog exhibition area showcases hundreds of purebred and famous breeds from China and abroad. Dog fighting originated from ancient Roman gladiatorial games and is currently very popular in Southeast Asia, as well as in Macao SAR. Two robust fighting dogs clash and battle, embodying a spirit of courage and striving for first place. Greyhound racing is highly popular in Macao SAR, and the scenic area introduced this activity so visitors can enjoy the thrill of Macao-style greyhound racing without traveling far.

Sand Spring Health Zone: The sand spring is a natural spring within the scenic area, with a gentle, ceaseless flow of crystal-clear, sweet-tasting water year-round. Behind the sand spring lies a dense expanse of pristine forest. Having weathered a thousand years of change, these ancient trees bear witness to Houtian’s transformation from a once lush, grassy oasis to the barren, desolate desert it is today. The sand spring has nourished local villagers for generations, sustaining their lives and farming. Legend says it was a blessed spring bestowed by the Dragon King to alleviate the harm caused by his nine sons to the local people. The sand spring remains warm in winter and cool in summer, rich in various minerals beneficial to health.

Youth Outdoor Activity Base: Established in early 2004, the base covers an area of 4,000 square meters and includes over ten outdoor adventure activities meeting national standards, such as beach soccer, beach volleyball, fun bridges, tower rappelling, tug-of-war, Dragon Gate leap, trust falls, escape walls, sailing models, and aviation models. The picnic and barbecue area, as well as the outdoor camping zone, can accommodate groups of over 500 people simultaneously.

Western Style Leisure Park: The Western Style Leisure Park was jointly developed by Houtian Desert Ecological Tourism Area and the Ningxia Tourism Association. Visitors can enjoy performances showcasing Western folk culture in the Mongolian yurt camp, taste authentic whole roasted lamb, and join camel or horse caravans to experience the charm of the western desert — even while in the south of the Yangtze River.

Combo Ticket: 80 RMB, includes admission, camel ride, sandboarding, zip-lining, desert go-karting, desert motorcycle or jeep surfing.
