Looking back at 2014: Conquer 7 New Attractions in Kaohsiung

On July 31, 2014, a series of gas explosions occurred in the Qianzhen and Lingya districts of Kaohsiung. That night, the city’s land was left in ruins, and its people went through some of their most difficult times. Over the past few months, thanks to the relentless efforts of the government and residents, Kaohsiung has gradually regained its original appearance and order. Looking back at the past year, whether through renovation or newly built projects, the city has created at least seven new attractions, allowing everyone to witness once again Kaohsiung’s resilient vitality and rich cultural creativity.

● New Main Library of the Kaohsiung Public Library

After four years of anticipation, the world’s first suspended-structure library — the new main branch of the Kaohsiung Public Library — was completed on November 13. The new library won the top prize in an international architectural design competition as a “green building cultural landmark where trees surround the building and the building surrounds trees.” Additionally, its “column-free interior space” and “top-down construction method” are two standout architectural features. Beyond emphasizing the relationship between people, books, and trees, it also records the beautiful vision of an unprecedented civic movement.

● Golden Lion Bridge
The Kaohsiung City Government carried out large-scale renovations of the Golden Lion Lake Scenic Area, including the construction of the new Golden Lion Bridge, the refurbishment of wooden boardwalks, and the development of lakeside plazas on both the east and west sides. These features were completed in November. The newly built Golden Lion Bridge features dazzling light changes at night, while the wooden boardwalks include a three-dimensional fountain golden lion installation and redesigned plaza landscapes along with the renovated lakeside area, showcasing a brand-new look for Golden Lion Lake. These enhancements provide local residents and visitors with a safer and more enjoyable recreational destination.
