You Tang Ruins

The You Tang Ruins are a cultural heritage site protected by Xinjian District.

Introduction:

Located in You Tang Village, Changyi Township, approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Xinjian County’s county seat. It lies west of the Gan River, east of Henghu and Lianwei, and about 2 kilometers from Changyi Town. The earthen city covers an area of about 2 square kilometers, with four gates and a perimeter of around 3 kilometers. Currently, only the northeastern section of the city wall remains, resembling a small hill (approximately 100 meters long and 10 meters wide). According to historical records, in the fourth year of the Tianhan era (97 BC), Liu Bo, son of Emperor Wu of Han, was made King of Changyi, establishing his realm in Shanyang Commandery (present-day Shandong). Seven years later, Liu Bo died and was succeeded by his son Liu He. In the first year of Yuiping (74 BC), Emperor Zhao of Han passed away without an heir. Upon the orchestration of Grand General Huo Guang, Empress Dowager summoned Liu He, the King of Changyi, to Chang’an to ascend the throne. Less than three months later, Huo Guang and others deposed him on grounds of “misconduct, debauchery, confusion, disregard for imperial etiquette, and disruption of Han dynastic systems.” After Emperor Xuan ascended the throne, Liu He was demoted to the title of Marquis of Haihun, granted a fief of 4,000 households, and sent to the remote and secluded southern region of Jiangxi. A city was built near Nanchang, named Changyi City after his former title as King of Changyi. To the southwest of the city there was a pond, commonly referred to as You Tang, hence the city also became known as You Tang City.
