The Pagoda-Front Peng Family Ancient Village

Located in Yangjia Village Committee, Liugongmiao Town, about 35 kilometers from Zhangshu City, this ancient village was first built in the early Qing Dynasty and is the core area of the historical Linqing Merchant Group. The village is a single-clan settlement of the Peng family, facing south with its back to the north. Most of the preserved ancient buildings were constructed by Peng clan members who were part of the Linqing Merchant Group. The ancient village still retains seven ancient lanes paved with bluestone slabs and blue bricks from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty, along with a complete ancient drainage system. According to the *Qingjiang County Place Names Gazetteer*, the village was established during the early Yuan Dynasty when the Peng family migrated from a village in Xinyu and built it in front of a pagoda, hence the name "Pagoda-Front."

Many of the existing houses were originally built in the early Qing Dynasty. The village covers an area of 3 square kilometers, with an overall layout centered around the Peng Family Ancestral Hall. In front of the village lies a fan-shaped pond. Residential houses spread out on both sides, forming a settlement with well-organized streets and alleys. The ancient dwellings are built against the mountain and layered upward, totaling six rows that radiate in a fan shape to both sides, creating a village with neatly arranged streets. This preserves the characteristics of villages in the Poyang Lake lakeside region, and the individual buildings also exhibit a fairly typical "Gan-style" architectural style. The ancestral hall dates back to the 2nd year of the Jiaqing era (1798) and the 1st year of the Daoguang era (1821). The architectural craftsmanship is characterized by stone, brick, and wood carvings. There are 25 traditional Qing Dynasty residences, one ancestral hall, one wing room, and three other structures still in existence. The construction of the village was influenced by tradition, feng shui, and orientation culture, resulting in scientifically designed, exquisitely crafted, and reasonably planned lanes and drainage facilities. In August 2013, Pagoda-Front Peng Family Village was included in the second batch of China’s Traditional Villages by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
