Zhenwu Tower (Min-Yue Thoroughfare)

Zhenwu Tower (Min-Yue Thoroughfare) is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

“Min-Yue Thoroughfare,” also known as Zhenwu Tower, was formerly called Yuan Emperor Pavilion. It is located on Chengkoutou Street in Shicheng County and was first built in the 38th year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1610). It was renovated in the 55th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1676), when its gate was inscribed with the words “Min-Yue Thoroughfare.” In the 39th year of the Qianlong reign (1764), it was repaired again, and its name was engraved on the lintel. Before the Qing Dynasty, it was the north gate tower of the old city of Shicheng. The tower was built in the 28th year of the Wanli reign (1610) and features the four large characters “Min-Yue Thoroughfare” carved on the lintel. Zhenwu Tower is a uniquely designed city gate tower. The interior of the tower spans 12 meters in length and includes arrow slits and watch windows, all interconnected, giving it an imposing aura.

Chengkoutou Street was first built during the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty. It is approximately 1 kilometer long and 2–3 meters wide. Running north-south along the Qinqjiang River, it is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections, each featuring ancient wells dug to serve the daily needs of local residents. Since ancient times, Chengkoutou Street has been the essential route for people from the northern upstream areas to enter the county town. The street also retains numerous ancient temples, arched bridges, wells, and historic buildings.

Qinqjiang Town: As the county seat of Shicheng at the source of the Ganjiang River, Qinqjiang Town is known as the “Min-Yue Thoroughfare.” It currently administers 27 village committees and 11 neighborhood committees, with a total population of 109,000.
