Japan’s cherry blossom season is about to begin,and Iiyama City in Miyagi Prefecture will also host the “Iiyama Castle Cherry Blossom Festival” from April 5 to 30. When the festival arrives, around three hundred cherry trees around Iiyama Castle will bloom brilliantly, drawing many tourists each year to enjoy the blossoms. At night,Iiyama Castle will also be illuminated until 22:00, lighting up the castle against the night sky,offering a different kind of nighttime cherry blossom beauty not seen during the day..

Iiyama Castle in Iiyama City, Miyagi Prefecture, was originally the residence of Katakura Kojuro, a retainer of the Date clan. Unfortunately, it was dismantled after the Meiji Restoration but was rebuilt 120 years later, in 1995 (Heisei 7).The reconstructed keep and Otemon gate, crafted by over 300 artisans from across Japan using historically accurate methods, hold significant architectural value.Climbing the keep offers views of the Iiyama cityscape and the majestic mountains of Mount Zao in Miyagi. Nearby, the museum displays models of Iiyama Castle’s construction, historical artifacts of the Katakura family, as well as samurai armor, swords, and ancient documents from the Warring States period.
