Gaotian Aofeng Academy

The Gaotian Aofeng Academy is a cultural heritage site protected by Jiangxi Province.

Location: Tianxin Village, Gaotian Town, Shicheng County (now within the campus of Gaotian Central Primary School)

Era: The 10th year of the Tongzhi reign in the Qing Dynasty (1871)

The Aofeng Academy was constructed in the 10th year of the Tongzhi reign (1871) during the Qing Dynasty, funded by local gentry including Wen Hegeng. It has a brick, wood, and earth structure with a hanging gable roof, spans 27.8 meters in width and 23.6 meters in depth, and covers an area of more than 1,500 square meters. The academy’s lintel bears the bold inscription “Aofeng Academy.” Inside, there are structures such as the Kuixing Pavilion, lecture hall, and study rooms. In the 26th year of the Guangxu reign (1900), an elementary school was established here. In the early years of the Republic of China, it was renamed Aofeng Higher Elementary School, and in 1935, it became the Central Primary School of the Fifth District.

During the period of the Central Soviet Area, the Red Army’s rear hospital was stationed here. In 1934, the Soviet government of Chishui County (established in August 1933, governing nine districts including Yiqian, Mulan, and Gaotian of the former Shicheng County; in June 1934, the Soviet governments of Chishui and Guangchang counties merged to form the Guang-Chi County Soviet Government) moved its office here. It now serves as Gaotian Central Primary School and continues to function as an educational institution.

Its preservation is of great significance for the study of the development of education in our county and the history of the Soviet Area. In March 2018, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of cultural heritage sites protected by Jiangxi Province.

Tianxin Village: Brief Introduction to Tianxin Village

Tianxin is located to the north of Gaotian Street, bordering Shangping and Hukeng villages to the east, Xinping to the north, Qingsheng to the west, and Gaotian to the south. The village office is situated at Youliaoshang on the boundary of Gaotian Village, with the Gaotian River flowing through it.

Tianxin Village has fewer mountains but more farmland, covering a total area of approximately 11.52 square kilometers, including 1,451 mu of arable land and 6,700 mu of mountainous land. The terrain is higher in the north and lower in the south, with mostly mountainous areas in the north, undulating hills in the east and west, and flat plains in the center, which is part of the Gaotian small plain.
