Beiyuyu Lighthouse

Beiyuyu Lighthouse is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Beiyuyu Lighthouse is located on the summit of Beiyuyu Island in the Yushan Archipelago, approximately 25 nautical miles southeast of Shipu Town, Xiangshan County, in the eastern part of Maotouyang. Situated at a key point of China’s territorial sea baseline, it is the easternmost national first-class lighthouse in China, renowned as the “No. 1 Lighthouse in the Far East” and serving as an international navigational aid. Constructed in the 21st year of the Guangxu reign (1895), the tower is cylindrical in shape, cast from cast iron, stands 16.9 meters tall, and has a diameter of 4 meters. In 1944, the lighthouse’s lighting equipment was destroyed during wartime. It was repaired in the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), but in 1955, the lighthouse’s top and lighting system were damaged by the Kuomintang. The top was rebuilt and the lighting system was replaced in 1987. The current lighthouse was reconstructed on the original site in 1985 with approval from the Ministry of Transport, featuring state-of-the-art domestic equipment. Beiyuyu Lighthouse holds significant value for the study of modern Chinese science, technology, and maritime history.
