Two Bays Cliff Inscriptions

The Two Bays Cliff Inscriptions are a cultural relic protection unit of Xiangshan County.

The cliff inscriptions are located on the rock face at the former Erwan Head in Shipu Town, now at the base of the hill behind the naval barracks area. All the carvings are inscribed characters in intaglio style, totaling ten pieces. Nine of them are vertical panels with varying character sizes. Some characters are about forty centimeters square, such as the piece “Yanhou Yongzhan” (严侯永瞻); others are only around ten centimeters square, such as the piece “De Yu Shi Cun” (德与石存), most of which were written by soldiers stationed there during the Ming Dynasty to defend against Japanese pirates, dating back over four hundred years. There is one horizontal panel with the six characters “Shi Zu Dang Ru Ying Er” (视卒当如婴儿), each character forty-seven centimeters square, bold and upright. Including the signature, the entire panel is 2.5 meters wide, inscribed in the Ming Dynasty, the 31st year of the Wanli era (1593), by “Qiantang Shan Chun” (钱唐单椿).
