Shanhai Tower

Shanhai Tower is a cultural heritage site protected by Xiangshan County.

Originally a private residence, Shanhai Tower is located in Huanggong’ao Village, Xinqiao Town, about 20 kilometers southwest of the county seat. It is a two-story building facing south with three rooms in total. In the first ten days of the first lunar month of 1948, Tang Kan and his wife, members of the Shanghai Municipal Committee’s Work Committee for Other Provinces under the Chinese Communist Party, were sent to work in Xiangshan. They stayed in the home of underground party member Shi Zhongping, which was the westernmost room on the upper floor of Shanhai Tower. According to instructions from their superiors, in order to carry out revolutionary work in Xiangshan, it was decided to establish the “Xiangshan Working Committee of the Chinese Communist Party,” and a meeting was held in Shanhai Tower. Later, strategies for the struggle against the enemy were also discussed and decided upon in this building, along with decisions to lead peasant struggles and organize an armed uprising. Subsequently, the “Xiangning People’s Guerrilla Unit” was formed to combat the reactionary forces of the Kuomintang and support the People’s Liberation Army in liberating Xiangshan.

Shanhai Tower is a memorial site commemorating the establishment of the county-level Party committee on the eve of Xiangshan’s liberation and the leadership of the local people in carrying out the revolutionary struggle. The easternmost room of the tower was once used as the living quarters of Sheng Cheng, a martyr who taught in Huanggong’ao during his lifetime. The building was renovated in 1998.
