Ling Shui Residence in Xizha, Wuzhen
Covering an area of 20,000 square meters, Ling Shui Residence is the largest garden-style architectural attraction in Xizha.
As the ancients said, “A mountain need not be high — it is famous so long as there is a deity on it; a lake need not be deep — it has spiritual power as long as there is a dragon in it.” In this spiritually rich place rests a literary dragon of China’s literary scene — Mr. Mao Dun. His memorial hall and mausoleum are located to the east of Ling Shui Residence.
In fact, Wuzhen has nurtured not only Mao Dun, but also Wang Huiwu, Kong Lingjing, Shen Zemin, and others. Their memorial halls are also located within Ling Shui Residence. With the four major memorial halls gathered here, this beautiful land is filled with the heroic spirit of ancestors striving for the nation and its people, making it a “red tourism” destination for receiving revolutionary tradition education.
Upon entering the garden, the first thing that catches your eye is a winding wall carved with traditional Chinese patterns, featuring “two dragons playing with a pearl” in the center and “plum, bamboo, crane, and immortals” on the sides. Through the lattice windows, you can admire the garden’s rockeries, clear waters, and lush trees, fully experiencing the charm of framed views.
It is rare to see such a large-scale garden in a water town ancient village. According to records, Tang Long, a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations during the early Chongzhen era, built this private garden here and named it “Ling Shui Immortal Residence.” It was later destroyed in war. The garden we see today has been restored to its original design. The entire Ling Shui Residence is bright and elegant, simple yet graceful, with winding paths leading to secluded spots.
