Hongyuantai Dye Workshop
China’s blue calico is world-renowned, and Wuzhen is one of its places of origin. Hongyuantai Dye Workshop was first established during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Its original location was in Nanzha, but it moved to this site during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. It serves as both a production base for blue calico and a distribution center for blue calico products.
At Hongyuantai Dye Workshop, you can watch live demonstrations of the traditional production process, or pick up some finished blue calico products at the shop in front.
Across the street is a raw material workshop for blue calico, where you can see elderly women de-seeding cotton, spinning yarn, and weaving cotton cloth. Watching the whole process, you’ll understand how blue calico is woven and how those fresh, lovely patterns are printed.
