Zhao Ming Academy (Imperial College) at Xizha
• A quaint and tranquil reading spot in Xizha, come here to read by the window and soak in the cultural ambiance of Wuzhen.
Attraction Introduction
Zhao Ming Academy is situated within the Xizha scenic area and was where the young Crown Prince of the Liang Dynasty during the Southern Dynasties studied in Wuzhen. Today, apart from viewing the rustic fish pond and plaques, visitors can also find a small reading room inside the academy — a great experience if you have time to read.
The ancient Ming Dynasty memorial archway inscribed with “Relic of the Six Dynasties” and “Reading Place of Crown Prince Zhao Ming of Liang and Minister Shen” is the iconic building of Zhao Ming Academy. Most visitors stop here for photos. Around the archway are ponds and ancient trees — a nice place to rest, or you can visit the nearby exhibition hall to see historic plaques and displays on past winners and winning works of the Mao Dun Literature Prize.
Book lovers shouldn’t miss the reading room in the academy — a rather niche spot with an elegant atmosphere. Though the book collection isn’t large, you can find plenty of materials related to ancient towns and water towns, as well as dedicated shelves for books by Mu Xin and Mao Dun. After storing your bag, you can enter for free, read by the window, and quietly spend an afternoon.
