Dongzha Jiangnan Woodcarving Exhibition Hall in Wuzhen
• Admire exquisite Jiangnan woodcarvings, and don’t miss the “Riding-Door Carved Beam” made from a single camphor wood trunk.
Attraction Introduction
The Jiangnan Woodcarving Exhibition Hall, also known as the “Baihua Hall,” was originally the grand residence of the Xu family in Dongzha. The building itself is a work of art adorned with carved beams and painted rafters. The hall houses numerous fine examples of Jiangnan woodcarvings, among which the “Guo Ziyi Birthday Celebration Riding-Door Carved Beam” made from a single camphor wood trunk is the most noteworthy and considered the museum’s prized treasure.
The woodcarvings in the hall feature a rich variety of subjects, including folk tales such as the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and Guo Ziyi’s Birthday Celebration, everyday scenes like fishing, cricket fighting, and drum performances, as well as traditional patterns such as dragons and phoenixes, and the Four Gentlemen (plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum), all exuding the folk charm of the Jiangnan region. Tour groups visit the woodcarving museum daily, and listening to the guides’ explanations will give you a deeper understanding of local folklore and carving techniques.
