Bridge Within a Bridge at Xizha, Wuzhen
At Xizha in Wuzhen, there are two bridges: Tongji Bridge and Renji Bridge. One runs north-south, the other east-west. The two bridges stand adjacent to each other at a right angle. No matter which bridge you stand by, you can peer through its arch and see the other one — like viewing the moon from the bottom of a well — hence earning the poetic name “Bridge Within a Bridge.” Both bridges feature an arch structure, standing tall and majestic. Viewed from the south riverbank, the semicircular arches of the two bridges are reflected on the water’s surface — neither perfectly round nor entirely distinct, creating a surreal interplay of light and shadow. This is one of Wuzhen’s most iconic sights. At night, under the glow of lights, the scene becomes even more enchanting.
The Bridge Within a Bridge is the most beautiful ancient bridge view in Wuzhen. Compared to double bridges elsewhere, it stands out in both grandeur and design. It is a perfect blend of human culture and pastoral beauty, combining wild exuberance with exquisite craftsmanship. Wild tree branches sprawl through the cracks between the bridges. Standing at the bridgehead, you can take in the full panorama of waterside pavilions, the meandering Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flowing northward, the elegant Wenchang Pavilion, and the towering White Lotus Pagoda. It is truly a masterpiece among bridge landscapes.
