Wuzhen Grand Theatre
• The main venue of the first Wuzhen International Drama Festival, hailed as "China's most beautiful theatre."
Attraction Introduction
The Wuzhen Grand Theatre was completed and put into use in May 2013, serving as the main venue for the first Wuzhen International Drama Festival. The theatre is located by Yuanbao Lake at the entrance of Wuzhen's West Scenic Area, with the scenic area’s eco parking lot to the east and the Mu Xin Art Museum to the west. Visitors can take a traditional Wupeng boat or walk across a boardwalk to reach the theatre from the small island.
The Wuzhen Grand Theatre integrates multiple functions including drama and concert performances, exhibitions, and cultural and artistic exchanges, and also serves auxiliary purposes such as rehearsals, conferences, and research. It is hailed as "China's most beautiful theatre." The design of the grand theatre was inspired by the concept of twin lotus flowers, and from above, it resembles a blooming twin lotus on the lake surface. Its exterior is clad with traditional Beijing bricks and old shipwood window frames with ice-crack patterns. The theatre has one underground level and seven above-ground levels, housing a large main theatre and a medium-sized multi-functional theatre, with a total seating capacity of 1,500.
The main theatre is the centerpiece of the Wuzhen Grand Theatre. The walls and dome of the auditorium are decorated with patterns of Wuzhen’s traditional blue calico, featuring three-tiered seating with private boxes on the second floor, totaling 1,135 seats. The medium-sized theatre is separated from the main theatre by a soundproof movable wall, allowing both connection and independence. It features retractable seating for 224 people and can be used as a multifunctional venue for performances, conferences, banquets, and 3D movie screenings.
