Dongzha Lizhi Academy in Wuzhen
• A former family school where Mao Dun studied in his childhood, now the Mao Dun Memorial Hall, where you can learn about his life.
Attraction Introduction
Lizhi Academy is located right next to the former residence of Mao Dun. It was once the family school where the young Mao Dun studied and has now been converted into the Mao Dun Memorial Hall. The academy exhibits photos about Mao Dun’s life, along with his works, manuscripts, and personal belongings, allowing visitors to explore the growth journey of this literary master.
The academy stretches from Guanqian Street in the front to Guanhou Street in the back. It was the first primary school in Wuzhen, and Mao Dun was one of its first batch of students. Today’s Lizhi Academy largely retains its original appearance. The plaque above the main gate is inscribed with the characters “Lizhi” (Determination), and the couplet on the pillars explains the name of the academy: “First establish the great, and those with determination will succeed.” Inside, there is a bust of Mao Dun, and on the wall behind it is written “Literary Master Mao Dun,” which is the signature landmark of the academy.
