Wuzhen East Scenic Area – Wenchang Pavilion
By the riverbank in front of the Lizhi Academy stands a pavilion called Wenchang Pavilion. The academy and the pavilion are separated only by the not-so-wide Guanqian Street. In the old days, when scholars visited Wenchang Pavilion, they were usually accompanied by servants who came by boat. The boat would moor at the riverbank beneath the pavilion, while the scholar went upstairs, and the servant would sit and wait on the long benches along the corridor. After the imperial examination system was abolished in the late Qing Dynasty, Wenchang Pavilion became a place for local people to relax. Thanks to its long-established central role, it also served as the town’s hub for news and information. As part of the Mao Dun Memorial Hall restoration project, the Lizhi Academy was restored to its original appearance, and Wenchang Pavilion regained its graceful look with upturned eaves overlooking the water.
