Datie Silk House in Wuzhen
Datie Silk House, founded in the early Guangxu era (1875), was established by Shen Xuechang. The shop operates with a workshop at the back, still using traditional craftsmanship to select cocoons, boil them, reel silk, strip floss, and weave brocade—all part of the process to create a piece of Wujin (Wuzhen silk). Visiting the workshop is quite interesting. Watch as the brocade weavers look at simple patterns on the table and skillfully weave beautiful designs using silk threads of different colors. A wooden loom is operated by two people—the weaver above arranges the silk threads neatly, while the one below follows the pattern to weave. With skillful hands, they create exquisite silk tapestries.
