North Zhazha, Wuzhen
In North Zhazha, Wuzhen, the four-kilometer-long Chexi Market River runs north-south through the large town before converging with Lantang Pond and Hengjing Port, forming a large expanse of water known as a "big shimmering pool." This stretch of river also served as the historical boundary between the Wu and Yue states during the Spring and Autumn period. “To the north of the town, where the land divides in rugged fashion, a solitary islet stands firmly in the middle of the current, around which the waters swirl and meander.” (Li Le, “Record of the Newly Built Watershed Mound”) To the east of this large shimmering pool formed by the confluence of these waters lies an earthen mound currently covered with lush mulberry trees and dense vegetation. The original site of the watershed mound was excavated during the river's dredging. To the west are two rivers—one leading to Taoyuan in Wujiang and the other to Hangzhou—while to the north and south sit two large cement plants: Jiangsu Wujiang Nanfang Building Materials Group affiliated with Sinopec, and Zhejiang Wuzhen Cement Plant. These two factories face each other, continuously expanding their scales, and seem to have been competing in some kind of race over recent years.
