Trench Ruins of the Coastal Island Liberation Battle
The Trench Ruins of the Coastal Island Liberation Battle is a cultural tourism attraction.
The Trench Ruins of the Coastal Island Liberation Battle are located in the overgrown areas of islands such as Jishan, Yangyu, Dalu, Xiaolu, and Pishan in the eastern waters (i.e., the East China Sea) of Yuhuan County.
After the liberation of Yuhuan on April 7, 1949, remnants of the Kuomintang forces continued to occupy islands such as Jishan, Yangyu, Dalu, Xiaolu, and Pishan, frequently harassing the mainland. This seriously affected the production and the safety of life and property of coastal fishermen, and posed a major threat to the overall security and stability of Yuhuan. From 1950 to 1955, after six years of arduous battle, the People's Liberation Army repelled repeated offensives by the remaining Kuomintang armed forces and finally liberated the entire territory of Yuhuan on February 12, 1955. Numerous trench fortifications were constructed during these battles.
The islands in Yuhuan County where the Trench Ruins of the Coastal Island Liberation Battle are situated are generally about 14 kilometers away from the county seat by land or sea. Among them, the most well-preserved are the trenches, tunnels, and bunkers at the mountaintop of Yangyu Island.
