Yuhuan Coastal Islands Liberation Memorial Exhibition Hall

The Yuhuan Coastal Islands Liberation Memorial Exhibition Hall is located on a hill in Yangyu Village, Jishan Township.

In early 1949, the Kuomintang’s “Jiangzhe Salvation Army” established a puppet Yuhuan County Government on Pishan Island. Relying on islands such as Jishan, Yangyu, Dalu, and Xiaolu, they awaited opportunities to counterattack, launching repeated armed harassment and raids, robbing local residents of their property. This continued until the liberation of Pishan Island in 1955, during which dozens of battles — large and small — took place. Many patriots, PLA officers and soldiers, and local people sacrificed their youth and lives for this land, leaving behind many moving heroic stories. Yangyu Island has always been a strategic military location. During the Second Revolutionary Civil War, it served as the base where the Red 13th Army’s 2nd Regiment moved its forces by sea in the later stage. During the Liberation War, it was again a focal point of contention between the People’s Liberation Army and the remaining Kuomintang armed forces. Militia members once captured a Kuomintang pilot at sea, and remnants of the “three defensive lines and two tunnels” from that wartime period remain relatively well-preserved to this day.

The Yuhuan Coastal Islands Liberation Memorial Exhibition Hall was originally the site of the former Yangyu Primary and Secondary School. It faces east and is situated westward, with open mountain terrain to the east and west, and boundless sea to the south and north. Covering an area of 400 square meters, it is a two-story steel-concrete structure. It was renovated in 2001 and officially opened to the public. The exhibition hall displays over 100 precious historical relics preserved from the revolutionary war period, including island models, maps of the war progression, photographs and artifacts from the war, and models of fishing production tools. Currently, the items in the exhibition hall have been temporarily relocated to the third floor of the Yangyu Village Committee building.

In April 2003, the Yuhuan Coastal Islands Liberation Memorial Exhibition Hall was designated as a Yuhuan County Patriotic Education Base.
