Nixi Lake Resort
Nixi Lake Resort is situated at the Niutou Mountain Reservoir in Linhai City, 12 kilometers from downtown Linhai. The area is surrounded by Baizhangqing Ecological Valley and Niutou Mountain Resort. This lake is a tributary of the Ling River, originating from Daluoshan in Xiaozhi Town, stretching from east to west. It is commonly known as the “Hundred-and-Twenty-Li Backflowing River,” hence the name Nixi Lake. The Niutou Mountain Reservoir is the second largest reservoir in Zhejiang Province. It is a large-scale comprehensive water conservancy project primarily for flood control and irrigation, combined with water supply and power generation. The reservoir controls a catchment area of 254 square kilometers above the dam site, with a total storage capacity of 302.5 million cubic meters, and boasts 86,000 mu of forested mountain land and 11,000 mu of water surface area.
The reservoir began surveying and design in 1971, was approved by the National Ministry of Water Resources in 1978, and broke ground in October 1980. After nine years of construction, the reservoir closed its gates for water storage in May 1989, and the project passed final acceptance in November 1996. The reservoir’s key infrastructure includes a main dam, spillway and emptying tunnel, water diversion and power generation tunnel, and a power plant. The main dam stands 59.3 meters high, is 435 meters long, and 6 meters wide at the top. It is an asphalt concrete inclined core rock-fill dam — one of the largest of its kind in China. The spillway is equipped with five 8-meter-wide and 12-meter-high radial steel gates, the largest in the province. The power plant has an installed capacity of 2×3,200 kilowatts, generating an average of 16.7 million kWh per year.
The reservoir area is a provincial-level eco-tourism resort in Zhejiang, featuring blue skies, clear waters, and lush mountains. It boasts rich natural landscapes such as overlapping peaks that look like arches, caves and cascading waterfalls, dense forests, and swaying bamboo groves. The shimmering lake harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding scenery, making it a prime destination for tourism and leisure. Covering an area of 420 mu, Nixi Lake Resort was designed in 1997 by the Hangzhou Landscape Architecture Design Institute. It is divided into a leisure and entertainment zone, a patriotic education zone, a greenery zone, a wild-nature zone, and a development reserve zone. After five years of development, about 170 mu of the area centered around Tianjige (modeled after Beijing’s Temple of Heaven) was completed, including well-equipped greenery, educational, and wild-nature zones.
