Zhishantou Site

The Zhishantou Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Zhejiang Province.

The Zhishantou Site is located in Nanfeng Village, Xiaozhi Town, Linhai City, over 30 kilometers west of downtown Linhai. From June 2014 to October 2015, the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Linhai Cultural Relics Protection Management Office jointly conducted an archaeological survey of the Zhishantou Site and its surrounding areas. The site is spread across a boot-shaped hill, at an elevation of 60–85 meters, and is estimated to cover a total area of about 50,000 square meters based on drilling surveys. On January 13, 2017, it was designated as part of the seventh batch of Protected Cultural Heritage Sites of Zhejiang Province by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province.

The site has yielded multiple prehistoric ash pits, numerous postholes, and architectural remains. Based on the characteristics of the unearthed pottery, the site mainly reflects two phases: the early phase exhibits features of the late Shangshan Culture, dating back approximately 8,500 years; the late phase shows traits of the Kuahuqiao Culture, dating from around 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, while also possessing unique characteristics of its own. A relatively thick layer of black silt was also discovered at the site, providing valuable information for understanding the ancient environment of this site and the wider region.

The discovery of the Zhishantou Site fills a gap in the prehistoric archaeology of Linhai City. It is another early Neolithic site found in the Ling River basin following the Xiata Site in Xianju, marking the beginning of exploration into early Neolithic culture in the lower reaches of the Ling River. It holds significant importance for a comprehensive understanding of early Neolithic cultures in southeastern China.

Nanfeng Village: Nanfeng Village is situated in the central part of Xiaozhi Town, Linhai City, a provincial-level ecological town and an emerging flower-producing township.
