Former Residence of Zhou Zhirou

The former residence of Zhou Zhirou is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former residence of Zhou Zhirou is located at No. 2-25, Xiajie Village, Dongcheng Town, Linhai City. It was designated as a “Linhai Municipal Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit” on December 5, 2003. On January 13, 2017, it was listed as part of the seventh batch of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province.

Zhou Zhirou (1896–1986), originally named Baifu, was from Dongcheng, Linhai. He graduated from the Baoding Military Academy and served as an instructor in military science at the Whampoa Military Academy, among other positions. In 1933 (the 22nd year of the Republic of China), he was sent to Europe and the United States to study aviation and was tasked with establishing the Chinese Air Force. Upon returning to China, he served as the Educational Director and later President of the Central Flying School, as well as Director of the Aviation Commission. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he also served as Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force Frontline Command, leading the Chinese Air Force in combat against Japan and achieving remarkable military success. In 1946 (the 35th year of the Republic of China), he became Commander of the Air Force Headquarters, which was reorganized from the Aviation Commission. In 1949, he went to Taiwan and later held positions such as Chief of the General Staff of the Taiwan “Ministry of National Defense,” “Governor of Taiwan Province,” Chief of Staff of the “Presidential Office,” “Strategic Advisor to the President,” and Director of the “Presidential Office Household Staff.” He was also awarded the rank of General.

The former residence of Zhou Zhirou was built in 1940 (the 29th year of the Republic of China). It faces south and has five bays, a two-story single-eave structure with a double-sloped gable roof. It features a post-and-lintel construction style, with a front corridor running the entire width. The building spans 20.3 meters in width and 13.6 meters in depth, with a total floor area of 552.16 square meters. The central bay is 4.5 meters wide, the side bays are 3.75 meters wide, and the end bays are 3.7 meters wide. The front features an open corridor with eaves, while the second floor is equipped with wooden railings adorned with simple carvings. The structure is plain yet elegant, with the entire exterior painted in iron-rust vermilion. The residence is generally well-preserved today.
