The Beijing Huairou Kuangou Pitaya Plantation is an ecological sightseeing park integrating scientific research, fruit picking, and leisure. Located 4 kilometers in the direction of Kuangou from the Beitai Road exit of the Beijing-Chengde Expressway, north of Qiaozi Barracks in Huairou District, it covers an area of 35 mu, employs over 30 staff members including 10 technical personnel, with a total investment of more than 3 million yuan. The plantation houses 12 pitaya greenhouses, including 7 seedling greenhouses, 1 potted plant greenhouse, and 4 nursery greenhouses. There are over 10,000 mature pitaya plants on-site, including more than 1,000 Mexican Red and African Red varieties—rare types currently seldom found in the Beijing market—as well as 500 potted plants and over 30,000 young seedlings. The expected annual yield is 40,000–50,000 pounds of pitayas. It has now become the largest pitaya picking garden in northern China. The plantation obtained organic product certification in 2007.

Pitayas are tropical fruits, and growing them in the north gives them a unique flavor. Our plantation allows picking from May each year until the end of the year. Visitors can admire the flowers while harvesting these tasty, nutritious southern fruits. In addition, there are plenty of jujubes and apricots available for picking.

Overview of Pitaya

Pitaya, also known as dragon fruit or lucky fruit, is a perennial vine plant of the Hylocereus genus in the cactus family. It is an emerging fruit with notable health benefits. Originally from the tropical regions of Central America, it is rich in nutrients and combines the advantages of fruit, flowers, vegetables, and medicine. Pitayas have an olive-like shape with bright red skin that is eye-catching. The flesh is either snow white or blood red, sweet but not cloying, with a light fragrance.

In addition to helping prevent constipation, promoting eye health, increasing bone density, lowering blood sugar, blood lipids, and blood pressure, aiding cell membrane formation, preventing anemia, reducing cholesterol, and whitening skin while preventing dark spots, pitayas also help detoxify heavy metals, combat free radicals, prevent age-related diseases, aid in weight loss, and protect against colorectal cancer. The sesame-like seeds in the pitaya flesh further aid in digestion. Pitaya juice has shown positive effects in inhibiting tumor growth, viruses, and immune responses. The total sugars in pitayas contain no caramel or sucrose, making it effective as a dietary treatment for hypertension, diabetes, and high uric acid, without any side effects.

Throughout their entire growth cycle, pitayas suffer from almost no pests or diseases, requiring little to no use of pesticides or hormones. Farmyard manure alone can meet their normal nutritional and reproductive growth needs.
