On February 28, six tourists who were trapped while climbing the wild Jiankou section of the Great Wall in Huairou District were finally found after a multi-party rescue operation. One of them unfortunately fell off a cliff and died. In recent years, there have been frequent incidents of outdoor enthusiasts getting trapped or killed, and the Jiankou section of the Great Wall in Huairou has been one of the hotspots for such accidents.
At around 9:00 p.m. on the 27th, the 110 Command Center of the Huairou Public Security Sub-bureau received a report that six tourists were trapped on the Jiankou section of the Great Wall in Huairou. Upon receiving the report, the sub-bureau immediately deployed officers from the Public Security Detachment, the Yanchi Police Station, and firefighters from the Yanchi Fire Squadron to the scene to carry out a rescue operation. At 1:07 a.m. the next day, the caller called again, reporting that one of the men had accidentally fallen off a cliff and had been out of contact since then. Rescue personnel carrying equipment immediately sped up their journey to the location of the trapped individuals. At 1:52 a.m., five trapped hikers were finally found. Later, emergency medical personnel from the 120 Emergency Center arrived on the scene and immediately began searching for the man who had fallen off the cliff. At 3:47 a.m., the man who had fallen was found in the valley, but he had unfortunately already passed away.
According to statistics, since 2011, the Huairou Public Security Sub-bureau has received 86 reports of people getting trapped while climbing “wild mountains” or the “wild Great Wall,” rescuing a total of 236 trapped individuals, 52 of whom were injured to varying degrees, with the longest entrapment lasting 76 hours. The Jiankou section of the Great Wall, known for its stunning scenery and treacherous terrain, has long been regarded as a “holy land” among outdoor enthusiasts. Although it is not an official tourist attraction, groups of “hikers” often come here to climb. Due to the complex terrain of the Jiankou section, incidents of hikers getting trapped or killed have occurred repeatedly.
