Last updated 2026-09-24 — British veterans carry a washing machine up a mountain to raise funds. In the UK, there is a group of former soldiers who are not content with a quiet life. They take part in various extreme sports solely to raise donations and support injured British soldiers. This loosely organized “veteran legion” hikes mountains, reliving camaraderie through charitable efforts...

The unique aspect of this event is that they are climbing England’s highest mountain while carrying a washing machine on their backs. They hope to raise funds for the Royal Marines Charity through this climb. The team leader, 39-year-old Bobby, is a former Royal Marine. For this climb, 39-year-old Bobby will team up with 10 other veteran comrades to scale England’s highest peak and raise money for the charity.

This is no easy task. Bobby and his team set off carrying hundreds of pounds of equipment, facing challenges as perilous as those on the battlefield. Whether it’s the weather, altitude sickness, or food supplies, all require patience and careful planning—something of a nightmare for these soldiers, but they are never short on courage.

Taking part in extreme sports is clearly not most people’s first choice for retirement. These British veterans explain that engaging in such activities kills two birds with one stone: they can raise money to help their fellow servicemen while reliving the thrill and excitement of military life.
