Yanqi Lake is located at the foot of the Yanshan Mountains, 8 kilometers north of Huairou District in the suburbs of Beijing. It borders the majestic Great Wall to the north and the vast North China Plain to the south, making it a picturesque water-themed amusement park. The lake features broad waters and crystal-clear surfaces. Flocks of wild geese often come here to rest during spring and autumn, which is how the lake got its name. Surrounded by mountains on three sides — to the north lies the Jundu Mountain (1,200 meters above sea level), to the west is the Hongluo Mountain (811 meters), and to the east is the Jindeng Mountain (186 meters). These mountains are covered with maple trees, pines, cypresses, torch trees, and various shrubs, covering an area of 1.5 square kilometers. The entire scenic area boasts a vegetation coverage rate of 90%. The surrounding mountains form a natural barrier, shielding the lake area from wind and sand. The air remains moist year-round, with an average annual temperature of 11.7°C, annual precipitation of 666.4 mm, and an average relative humidity of 55% — rising to 75–77% in July and August. The air quality is classified as Grade I. The lake water is clean and clear, home to dozens of aquatic species including fish, shrimp, and turtles. Rare animals such as golden-edged terrapins and salamanders have been spotted here multiple times. High-demand waterfowl and migratory birds — such as wild geese, cranes, white swans, and freshwater gulls — often inhabit and breed along the lakeshore. The entrance area and north gate zone feature garden ornaments in the style of southern China. A 10,000-square-meter garden-style green space has been developed along the lakeside, with over 100,000 precious trees and plants added, including maple trees, ginkgoes, silk trees, bamboo, and plane trees — ensuring flowers in three seasons and evergreen foliage throughout the year. After years of development, the cultural and natural landscapes of Yanqi Lake blend seamlessly. In spring and summer, the area is shaded by lush greenery; in golden autumn, a sea of red unfolds as the Great Wall winds through the overlapping mountain peaks. The vast lake surface shimmers with blue waves, while hundreds of boats dot the waters, creating an ideal setting for painters and artists. The mountain vegetation includes over 100 plant species, providing excellent opportunities for young people to collect plant specimens and create various botanical artworks. Yanqi Lake has become an ideal destination for sightseeing and leisure. Here, we have carefully developed multiple “extreme rappelling” routes and “extreme rock climbing” cliffs, making this one of our primary outdoor adventure training bases in Huairou.
