Huairou Qinglong Gorge

Huairou Qinglong Gorge is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

Qinglong Gorge is 75 km from Sanyuanqiao in Beijing and 50 km from the Capital International Airport. It is located 20 km north of Huairou District, at the junction of plains and mountainous areas.

Qinglong Gorge is a natural scenic area that combines green mountains, clear waters, and the ancient Great Wall. Located where the plains meet the mountains on the outskirts of Beijing, the area features mountains on both sides and water in the middle, characterized by the high-mountain canyon terrain of the Yanshan Mountain Range. The scenic area spans 150 hectares and stretches over ten li from north to south. The ancient ruins of the Ming Great Wall lie atop the surrounding peaks. The majestic Longxia Lake Dam stretches across the center of the gorge. Built in 1969 and completed in 1972, the dam stands 59 meters high, is 283 meters long, and 4 meters wide, making it the first concrete arch dam in Beijing.

It divides the scenic area into two parts: the northern section is the Longxia Lake cruise area, mainly featuring motorized boats (speedboats, dragon boats, antique painted boats, and luxury cruise ships). The southern section is the water play area, primarily offering bamboo rafts and paddle boats, with water depth generally maintained at 1 to 2 meters. The Longxia Lake area covers approximately 0.6 square kilometers, with a water storage capacity of 14.8 million cubic meters and a maximum depth of 50 meters. On the morning of May 3, 1998, Comrade —, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People’s Republic of China, accompanied by his wife Wang Yeping and Beijing Municipal Party Committee Secretary —, visited Qinglong Gorge for a pleasant tour and inscribed: “—, 1998, at Huairou Qinglong Gorge.”

Since 1996, the scenic area has invested in developing several sightseeing zones: the Qinglong Mountain Sightseeing Area, known for exploring ancient Great Wall relics and admiring their historic appearance; the Canglong Valley Scenic Area, featuring waterfalls and natural springs; the small boat and bamboo raft water play area; the Longxia Lake landscape area; and the leisure and fitness recreation area with a beach at the bottom of the gorge. Additionally, new and thrilling attractions have been developed, including a sightseeing cable car, bungee jumping, rock climbing, speed racing, paragliding, and water swings.

In 2001, the scenic area was rated as a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic spot. The area also boasts well-developed service facilities, including serene and elegant courtyard-style accommodations, as well as the comprehensive Longxia Hotel that integrates dining, lodging, and conference hosting. Here, visitors can enjoy local cuisine with a rustic flavor and sample rainbow trout prepared in various ways—sure to delight your taste buds.

Self-driving Route:

From Sanyuanqiao in Beijing, take the Jingmi Road to Huairou. At the open roundabout, turn left, then right at the first traffic light, and continue north along the Huai-Feng Highway. After passing Yanqi Lake, drive seven kilometers to reach the destination. (Clear directional signs are provided along the way.)

2. Take bus 936 Branch Line: Peak season: Direct route to Qinglong Gorge Scenic Area (approximately April – November)

Off-season: To the Qinglong Gorge intersection (3 km from the scenic area), then transfer to City North Bus Line 2 or a taxi.

2. Take Tourist Bus 16 from Dongdaqiao or Xuanwumen, departing between 6:00 and 8:00 am.

Train: Take the L677 train from Xizhimen Railway Station directly to the scenic area.
